  • Judges & Prophets Classled by our member Susan Segal will use Robert Alter’s translation:  Ancient Israel – The Former Prophets: Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings, W.W. Norton & Company.  It is available in paperback on Amazon and in hardback through third-party sellers listed on Amazon. Come, let’s get into the folk memories, court intrigues, great kingdoms, and military campaigns of the “former prophets.” We discovered that there actually were no walls around Jericho when Joshua "blew" them down (archaeologically speaking).  We met the legendary David and discussed his bloody deeds in order to quell the Philistine threat and retain his throne. Who knew that he probably did not kill Goliath, but Elkhanan did?)  We followed David's rise to power, admired his tenacity and shook our heads at the bloody exploits to keep his kingdom.   Until, one day, David tells his son, Solomon: "I am going the way of all the earth.  And you must be strong and be a man.  And keep what the Lord your God enjoins, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commands, and His dictates and His admonitions, as it is written in the teaching of Moses, so that you may prosper in everything you do and in everything to which you turn." (1Kings2:2-3) But children sometimes do as they wish, right? Join us Thursdays, at noon, via Zoom. To register please contact Susi Segal at susiwintsegal@gmail.com
  • Adult Hebrew Class, We are hoping to start a new Adult Hebrew class in January. This class starts with learning the Hebrew Aleph-Bet and goes on to learning our basic prayers for home use. You will become competent to participate in Shabbat and holiday services. We also include learning about Jewish holidays and customs. If the interest is there, it can lead to becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah.  There is a minimum number of students necessary for the class to begin. This course is free for members. Please note that there is a $100.00 charge per semester for non-members this class plus the cost of books.  Click Here to register.

We also offer numerous holiday workshops, special lectures and cultural programs throughout the year.

Significant Jewish Books

  • Day After Night: A Novel by Anita Diamant
In her best-selling novel, The Red Tent, Anita Diamant reimagined the lives of women in biblical times, the community of support between them, and their unmarked footsteps in history. Her new novel, Day After Night, seeks out a woman’s narrative in a real event that took place in Israel three years prior to statehood.
  • America’s Prophet: Moses and the American Story by Bruce Feiler
Bruce Feiler opens up the Exodus story in a new way by viewing it through a different lens–the history of the United States of America. “For four hundred years, one figure stands out as the surprising symbol of America,” Feiler writes. “His name is Moses.”
